Urodacus yaschenkoi

Urodacus yaschenkoi

This scorpion reaches adulthood (6th instar) after 4 years with 5 successive molts. The scorpion in the left image is a juvenile, possibly a 4th instar. Note the more slender appearance with the sting and final tail segments being dark in colouration. The scorpion on the right is in the process of capturing a trapdoor spider which happened to wander down the burrow alerting the scorpion. Spiders often make easy meals for scorpions due to their soft bodies.
Surface activity consists of maintaining the burrow entrance and waiting for potential food items. Other than this the only other surface activities of this scorpion occur during mating season when the adult males wander off looking for females and when subadults molt and choose to dig a new burrow.
